Pre-Conference Workshop
Friday, June 19, 2026
9:30am-3:30pm (followed by an optional SSO library tour)
Join librarians from professional orchestras in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. for the pre-conference regional workshop! This full day workshop is suitable for community and academic music librarians and those occupying these kinds of roles in community and educational music making. No library experience is required. In the morning, we will use an upcoming SSO program as a basis for introducing procedures and resources for music sourcing, budgeting and ordering, and discuss considerations for music preparation including bowings, freight, rights and reporting. After lunch, there will be a session on sourcing works for special programs such as movies, pops, new commissions and arrangements. The final session will be a panel discussion on library philosophy (how and why we do what we do) and an opportunity for general Q&A with the day’s presenters. Finally, an optional tour of the SSO library will be offered via public transport to the offices. If you’re in charge of an ensemble’s music library, this workshop will be absolutely invaluable, both for the information presented, and for chatting with professional librarians. We have built in plenty of opportunities for networking and connecting during the breaks and in sessions. And for a deeper dive into the fabulous world of ensemble librarianship, you may want to consider attending the full MOLA conference for some really fascinating sessions!
